"Follow your curiosity"
Hello.
This is Aoyagi.
Here's a column to refresh your palate once in a while.
So, in that light-hearted tone, today I'd like to write about a laid-back dining experience.
The other day, I went to an exhibition by an acquaintance, a place I don't usually go to.
On the way back from the exhibition, I happened to come across a Chinese restaurant called "Chinese Home Cooking Tomo."
There was an unfamiliar sign in front of the store that read "Lamb Noodles."
My coworker, Yutaka, and I were intrigued and wondered what kind of food they had, so we went in.
After sitting down and taking a breather, I looked over the menu and without any hesitation ordered "mutton noodles."
It is written as "lamb noodles" but is pronounced as "yanroumen."
Lamb has a unique flavor and people's tastes differ, but I love it.
Chicken and pork are the most common ingredients used in ramen broth, and even beef is rare, so this was my first time eating ramen made with lamb.
The lamb noodles that were brought to us were straight noodles in a clear soup with plenty of thinly sliced lamb floating on top.
It is also sprinkled with chopped green onions, cilantro, and red chili peppers.
The subtle aroma of lamb blends with the refreshing scent of coriander, making it appetizing despite its simple appearance.
Taking a sip of the soup, I was surprised at how light the salt-based soup was, yet the deep flavor came flooding in.
I started eating it without any idea what it would taste like, and before I knew it, I had eaten it all, completely absorbed in the food.
The comfort of being honest with your curiosity
Trying lamb noodles for the first time, I once again realized the joy of trying new things.
When we're tired or short on time, we tend to choose familiar foods that taste as good as always and leave us feeling satisfied as always.
Of course, times like that are necessary and can make you happy, but eating shouldn't become a chore.
(The words of the village chief of Bunju that I read in a book have stayed in my mind.)
If you follow your curiosity and have a little bit of adventure, you will have all kinds of encounters like the ones we had this time.
Even if you fail, it will be a learning experience.
It's nice to let your curiosity take you on a little adventure even in the midst of everyday life.
