"Sailor Jane - No Ordinary Dub"

This time, I'd like to introduce an album.


I've been completely hooked since last week, thanks to a record recommended by Toyo-san, a staff member.

"Sailor Jane - No Ordinary Dub"





This album is Sailor Jane's reggae/dub reinterpretation of SADE's masterpieces, which I'll probably listen to forever.


Sailor Jane is from Florida and active in Jamaica.

As a singer and creator, she is incredibly meticulous, fine-tuning every detail of her music herself.



As usual, my habit of delving deep into any artist that catches my interest kicked in, and I found an interview article.

"Reconstruction" not "Imitation"

After translating and reading it,
I found a line that said, "I'm not imitating SADE. I'm reconstructing it in a form suitable for today, from my own perspective."



That attitude is directly reflected in the sound, making it both nostalgic and new.

It feels like the original's essence is preserved, but updated with Sailor Jane's individuality and values.



I strongly resonated with this idea, feeling it perfectly aligns with APPLEBUM's approach to creation.



And another thing.

During the production, she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and reportedly continued to record and sing while undergoing treatment.



I was deeply impressed by her words, "Creating this work became my hope."



I genuinely thought she is a cool person living her life to the fullest.



There are many cover songs out there, but some resonate with me while others I just skip.

I realized that the songs that resonate, like those on this album, are not imitations but reconstructions infused with new life, carrying the artist's thoughts and story.


Even if I don't understand the English lyrics, such songs still evoke something in me.
