The Early Days of Hip Hop

Recently, I had the opportunity to watch "THE SUCCESSOR," an event that delved into the history of Japanese hip-hop, held as part of the Music Awards Japan Week program.

It was a very insightful event where I could witness the origins of hip-hop and how its culture has been passed down, as told from the perspectives of DJs, MCs, dancers, and graffiti writers. It also showed how hip-hop spread in Japan, with performances by artists representing each category.
Even though I thought I knew its history, experiencing its energy firsthand made me rediscover the depth and excitement of hip-hop culture.

Since its establishment, APPLEBUM has drawn countless inspirations from hip-hop culture. Not just music, but also fashion, art, sports, and the free spirit and rebellious attitude. All of these are important elements that shape the current APPLEBUM.

For this playlist, I have selected old-school hip-hop, mainly from the late 1970s to early 1980s, which can be considered the origin of hip-hop.

Every song overflows with the freedom and playfulness of a time when rules hadn't been set, and the pure energy of wanting to entertain. The grooves and ideas that still shine today are the foundation of current hip-hop and various other cultures.

It should feel nostalgic for those who know the history and fresh for those encountering it for the first time.

There is always a beginning to the hip-hop we take for granted today.
Listening to its origins might also be a way to understand the future of the culture.
